Do you love skiing, kids, and adventure?

Sport has the power to teach, heal, empower and transform.

With your help, we can change lives and help Indigenous youth reach their potential.

Volunteer with us

Spirit North is looking for enthusiastic, caring volunteers who love working with kids.

This winter, Spirit North will get over 8,000 children in over 50 communities across Alberta, British Colombia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on skis – and we’d love your help.

You don’t need to have a strong background in cross-country skiing – just a great attitude!

frequently asked questions

Do volunteers help on weekdays or weekends?
We need volunteers for weekdays during school hours. If you only have weekend availability, please go ahead and submit your information. We will contact you if we have a weekend event.

Is there an age requirement?
We ask that all volunteers are at least 16 years old.

What is the time commitment for volunteers?
Ideally, Spirit North volunteers are able to join us for the full school day, but if you can only attend for a few hours, we can accommodate your schedule.

We typically split the day into morning and afternoon sessions, and a few classes rotate out within each session. So, even if you can only participate for a few hours in the middle of the day, we would be happy to have your help. We only ask that you give us a minimum of three volunteer hours at a time. The day will wrap up by 5 pm at the latest.

Are there a range of participating locations?
We work all across the province. To minimize transportation time, we will place you with a community that is close to where you live, based on the mailing address you share with us.

Are volunteers responsible for their own transportation?
Yes. All volunteers need to transport themselves to and from the location. We will reimburse your mileage costs to and from event locations.

We help communities to move from introductory events to community-led, sustainable programs that promote lifelong well-being. Our collaborative, play-based approach engages children in sport and activity. Spirit North ski days are active, inclusive and focused on participation.

We would love to bring our fun, holistic approach to your school and community.

Recognizing that the most successful programs are community led and owned, we provide:

  • Cross-country ski coaching certification from the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
  • Alignment of programs with the Aboriginal Long Term Participant Development Pathway (ALTPD)
  • Competitive event support
  • Trail development
  • Program support
  • And of course….skis!
